Niantic Labs are no stranger to cute creatures in mobile games for AR; it popularized the genre with games like Pokémon Go and Pikmin Bloom. But now Niantic is betting on its own IP with a new AR experience called Peridot.
The game is named after the animals in the middle of the game. Peridoti, or Dots, as Niantic also calls them, are to be raised from birth to adulthood and can be bred to create new variations of peridotek. Because this is an AR game like Pokémon Go, you will be able to travel with your Dots to help you find items in the world or you can use them to take photos at local landmarks.
When you pick up some features from the madness of Tamogachi or Nintendogs (or, you know, real pets), you’ll spend time with your Doty by teaching them tricks, feeding them and yes, you can stroke Peridot. When breeding dots, you can mix and combine them with your friends’ creatures with different characteristics to create entirely new creature archetypes and their combinations for further species diversification.
Niantic is set to launch Peridot in selected territories and countries soon, although no exact locations or release dates have been specified. You can pre-register for Peridot on the game’s website to receive updates on when it will be available. Expect the game to run on iOS and Android devices as soon as it’s available.
