It’s officially the season of happy anime

I’ve been watching a lot of depressing shonen anime over the past few months where a lot of people die. Needless to say, I needed something light-hearted, cute, and most importantly, really funny. I was all set to welcome something like Spy x Familya comedy action anime about a spy who has to put together and maintain a fake family, in my life.

But in the first episode, I got something better than feel-good fluff: I got a new crush.

Meet Twilight, the enigmatic spy tasked with starting a fake family, who is also very attractive and very cool and very aloof. An expert fighter and master of espionage, but with enough of a weakness to catch telepathic orphan Anya.

Airing this Saturday, the second episode promises that Twilight (under the alias Loid Forger) will find a woman to continue its charade, making this already juicy premise even juicier. “This will introduce a Cold War era Mr and Mrs Smith corner with the series,” Kambole Campbell wrote to Polygon, “as a constant game of deception and espionage set in their mirage of domestic bliss.” I can not wait.

While I’m here, I’d like to recommend another anime that combines the stakes of love and war, albeit on a less global scale. Kaguya-Sama: Love is war follows two ambitious high school students, class president Shirogane and vice president Kaguya. After some fellow students suggested that they make a good couple, the two decide to play a game to find the other to confess romantic feelings first. The one who collapses loses, and they’re pretty sure they won’t fall for the other.

Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happens, and the two now refuse to show any attraction or else they’ll lose their game and their pride. Still, they do their best to try to make the other collapse, while also not sure if both parties feel the same. It’s a dynamic back and forth, fueled by colorful – and blissfully unconscious – side characters. Kaguya-Sama: Love is war takes full advantage of its hysterical premise, also capturing the feeling of being a teenager and having a stupid, gigantic, all-encompassing, absolutely embarrassing crush – and I mean that in the best possible way.

The third season of Kaguya-Sama: Love is war aired last Friday and the first episode is just as hilarious as the previous two seasons. Both shows are now available on Crunchyroll! —Petrana Radulovic

This week on YouTube Elden Ring is, yes, incredibly difficult. But it’s also very funny? Jenna Stoeber of Polygon explains how with Elden RingFromSoftware masters jokes and environmental humour, a style of storytelling where the punch line is almost always…You Died.
